Question:

What is the performance when I encrypt the hard drives using the Ciphertex NAS's AES-256 bit encryption?

Answer:

Because encryption/decryption is performed constantly by software during read & write, there is a performance impact with encrypted drives.

The Ciphertex CX-5000 NAS maximum Read and Write performance is reduced by approximately 60% when Volume based encryption is enabled.

For the larger NAS units the performance reduction is not apparent through the Gigabit Ethernet interfaces.
